Understanding ABA
What Is ABA Therapy? A Family-Friendly Introduction
A plain-language overview of Applied Behavior Analysis and how it supports meaningful growth.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based approach to understanding behavior and how it is shaped by environment. At its heart, ABA is about helping people learn skills that make everyday life richer and more independent.
What ABA focuses on
- Meaningful skills — communication, daily living, social connection, and independence.
- Positive behavior support — understanding why a behavior happens and teaching helpful alternatives.
- Individualization — every plan is built around the person's strengths, needs, and family priorities.
How it works
A qualified clinician (often a BCBA) assesses strengths and goals, then designs a plan with specific, measurable objectives. Progress is tracked carefully and adjusted over time so support stays responsive to real growth.
What to expect
Sessions can happen at home, in the community, or (in the future) at a center. Families are encouraged to be active partners — the strategies that work in a session work even better when woven into everyday routines.
ABA is not one-size-fits-all. It is a flexible, person-centered science applied with compassion to help each individual thrive.
