5 Ways to Prepare for Your First ABA Session

Above and Beyond the Spectrum 9/9/2026

Simple, practical steps to help your family feel ready and confident for the first visit.

Starting therapy is a big step, and a little preparation goes a long way. Here are five things that help the first session feel comfortable and productive.

1. Share what matters most

Think about your family's daily routines, your child's favorite activities, and the goals that feel most important to you. Your clinical team wants to hear it all.

2. Set aside a familiar space

A quiet, comfortable area with a few favorite items helps the first meeting feel natural — not like a clinic visit.

3. Write down your questions

It's easy to forget questions in the moment. Jot them down ahead of time so nothing gets missed.

4. Be ready to collaborate

The best outcomes come from partnership. Come curious, and know that your insights as a caregiver are essential.

5. Give yourself grace

Starting something new can feel overwhelming. That is completely normal. Take it one step at a time — your team is there to support the whole family.
